Last week, the Chinese Bioscience Association (CBA), in collaboration with the Stanford Biotech Group (SBG), hosted a Career Development Workshop that brought together students, postdoctoral researchers, and industry professionals for an insightful discussion on what it takes to build a resilient and impactful career in today’s biotechnology landscape.
The program opened with welcoming remarks from CBA President Yu-Tzu Tai, who emphasized the organization’s mission to strengthen the life sciences community through education, networking, and shared experiences. This was followed by an introduction from CBA Operations Director Brian Su, who provided an overview of CBA and SBG and highlighted how the two organizations work together to support professional growth across the sector.

The main event, the panel discussion led by CBA Secretary Shuyue Zhan, gave the stage to amazing leaders from across biopharma, who shared their insights.
• Michael Brody, Formulation Expert, Brabant Biotech
• Liyu Wu, VP of Business Development, LIDE Biotech
• Patrick Collins, Chief Scientific Officer, Wield Therapeutics
• Yang Li, EVP of Research, Surrozen
• Vivian Leung, Executive Partner, Stealth Staffing
Together, they offered a multi-faceted perspective on career development—spanning product development, business strategy, leadership, and talent acquisition. The panel underscored that biotech careers are rarely linear; instead, they evolve through personal choices, emerging opportunities, and shifting priorities. Topics included transitions beyond traditional scientific roles, the importance of transferable skills such as communication and cross‑functional collaboration, and the change in mindset required when moving from academia to industry. Panelists also reflected on key decision points and the broader responsibilities of leadership, where success depends not only on technical expertise, but also on people management and strategic thinking.
The discussion also explored the growing influence of artificial intelligence (AI) in biotechnology. While AI is not expected to replace scientific judgment, it is already reshaping workflows and accelerating productivity. Those who learn to integrate AI effectively into their work will be well-positioned for the future, making adaptability an essential skill in the decade ahead.

Participants posed thoughtful questions throughout the panel, then continued the conversation afterward, creating a dynamic environment for networking, reflection, and idea exchange.

Overall, the workshop reinforced a key principle: there is no single blueprint for success in biotech. Careers are shaped by a series of decisions—some planned, others unexpected—and by one’s ability to navigate change with intention and resilience.
Behind the scenes, CBA Vice President Songli Wang contributed significantly to event planning and coordination, while Alliance and Volunteer Director Jade Hsu ensured a warm and welcoming atmosphere for all attendees.
